Waitin on Wednesday- Pandemonium

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, that spotlights upcoming releases that I am eagerly anticipating.
 This week's can't-wait-to-read is:

Title: Pandemonium
Author: Lauren Oliver
Format: Hardcover
Publish Date: March 6, 2012
Series: Yes

 Goodreads Summary:
I’m pushing aside the memory of my nightmare,
pushing aside thoughts of Alex,
pushing aside thoughts of Hana and my old school,
push,
push,
push,
like Raven taught me to do.
The old life is dead.
But the old Lena is dead too.
I buried her.
I left her beyond a fence,
behind a wall of smoke and flame.

Lauren Oliver delivers an electrifying follow-up to her acclaimed New York Times bestseller, Delirium. This riveting, brilliant novel crackles with the fire of fierce defiance, forbidden romance, and the sparks of a revolution about to ignite.

I cannot wait to find out what is going to happen to Alex. The ending of Delirium was such a cliff hanger. I'm going to be honest here I thought Delirium was good but not excellent. Until the last chapter which was action packed, gut wretching sadness. If Oliver had ended it differently I would wait until Pandemonium was out for awhile before reading it. I hope that Pandemonium is better than Delirium which if she starts it from where Delirium left off it will be excellent. I pre-ordered it from the library already so when it comes out I am on top of the list.

What are your thought/ feelings of this book. Let me know :)

The Boyfriend List- E. Lockhart

Name: The Boyfriend List
Author: E. Lockhart
Format: Hardcover
Source: Borrowed
Rating: 4/5

GoodReads Summary:
E. Lockhart’s spot-on dialogue and descriptions of painfully but hilariously relatable situations make this young adult novel an addictive read.

Fifteen-year-old Ruby has had a rough ten days. During that time she:

   * lost her boyfriend (#13 on the list)
   * lost her best friend (Kim)
   * lost all her other friends (Nora, Cricket)
   * did something suspicious with a boy (#10)
   * did something advanced with a boy (#15)
   * had an argument with a boy (#14)
   * had a panic attack
   * lost a lacrosse game (she's the goalie)
   * failed a math test (she'll make it up)
   * hurt Meghan's feelings (even though they aren't really friends)
   * became a social outcast (no one to sit with at lunch)
   * had graffiti written about her in the girls' bathroom (who knows what was in the
   boys'!?!)

But don't worry—Ruby lives to tell the tale. And make more lists

Ruby Oliver is laugh out loud funny as she works her way through the boyfriend list her shrink has asked her to write down.  She works her way through her breakup with her boyfriend Jackson and deals with her friends not speaking to her. It was funny and sad all at the same time.  It is a light read when you need something funny. I will be looking out for Lockhart’s books in the future. I enjoyed her writing and felt like I could connect in a way with Ruby. I felt her anguish over her breakout with Jackson and although I did not always agree with her way of healing with it I found she was a realistic and smart character.
Ruby Oliver is someone I would love to be friends with. She is hilarious and loyal. She realizes what a jerk Jackson is but still has feelings for him like most people would.  I liked her no holding back way of describing the situations she finds herself in. The footnotes were an added bonus. They fit right it perfectly and added further insight into her thoughts and feelings without rambling.
I think this is a fun book everyone should read when you’re having a bad day. It certainly cheered me up.

Firelight- Sophie Jordan

Title: Firelight
Author: Sophie Jordan
Format: E-Book
Source: Bought new
Rating: 4/5

Goodread Summary:

I stumbled upon Firelight. I had recently received me e-reader and was looking for some books to purchase for it.  I came across it for a few dollars on my reader store and it included a good rating from Goodreads so I decided to purchase it and try it out. Dragons are not usually my thing but I thought why not.  It was so good. I could not put it down.
The Cover is amazing. It is one of my favourite covers of 2011 if not ever. I love the colors and the visual it gives to the story.
The POV is mostly from Jacinda who is a fire Draki. We see her struggle with what her pride wants and what she wants.   I liked Jacinda, I found she was a realistic character, she may be a drake but she still has human emotions and when her mom makes a decision that changes her life she does not take it well just like anyone else. Then Will appears. Oh Will you are so great. I wish I could meet him, he sounds like an awesome guy. He surprised me. I liked him from that start and kept on liking him.
Tamara and Jacinda’s mom I was not a huge fan of. I understood Tamara’s resentment but I felt like she was pretty harsh on Jacinda like being a drake was Jacinda’s choice.  Her mom I felt was also very harsh on Jacinda and seemed to favour Tamara.  I understand why she felt she related to Tamara more but I also did not like how she treated Jacinda at all. I hope I like both characters in the next book much more.
I am torn about Cassin.  I hate how he treats Jacinda and her family but I seen glimmer’s of something more under the surface and I do not think he is all bad. I hope he improves in Vanish.
I gave this book a 4/5 and I eagerly anticipate reading Vanish.
A hidden truth.
Mortal enemies.
Doomed love.

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki—a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.
Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.
Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, that spotlights upcoming releases that I am eagerly anticipating.
 This week's can't-wait-to-read is:
Title: Fever
Author: Lauren DeStefano
Format: Hardcover
Release date: February 21, 2012
Series: Yes

Goodreads Summary:
Rhine and Gabriel have escaped the mansion, but danger is never far behind.

Running away brings Rhine and Gabriel right into a trap, in the form of a twisted carnival whose ring mistress keeps watch over a menagerie of girls. Just as Rhine uncovers what plans await her, her fortune turns again. With Gabriel at her side, Rhine travels through an environment as grim as the one she left a year ago - surroundings that mirror her own feelings of fear and hopelessness.

The two are determined to get to Manhattan, to relative safety with Rhine’s twin brother, Rowan. But the road there is long and perilous - and in a world where young women only live to age twenty and young men die at twenty-five, time is precious. Worse still, they can’t seem to elude Rhine’s father-in-law, Vaughn, who is determined to bring Rhine back to the mansion...by any means necessary.

In the sequel to Lauren DeStefano’s harrowing
Wither, Rhine must decide if freedom is worth the price - now that she has more to lose than ever.
I wish this book would come out, the author was giving away copies but unfortunately it was only for people in the US. I contemplated moving there but my bf was against the idea. Unfortunately.  This is the sequel to Wither which is one of the best books I have read this year. It is amazing. I love dystopian novels and the characters in this story just blew me away. I was not even finished Wither when I knew I needed to read Fever.  Gratefully it will be out in 2012 but I still have to be patient which I am not always good at.
This is an amazing series, I recommend it. It is fast pace and action pact. I could not put it down.

Withering Tights- Louise Rennison

Title: Withering Tights
Author: Louise Rennison
Format: Hardcover
Source: Borrowed from the library
Rating: 3/5

Goodreads Summary:
Hilarious new series from Queen of Teen – laugh your tights off at the (VERY) amateur dramatic antics of Talullah and her bonkers mates. Boys, snogging and bad acting guaranteed!

Picture the scene: Dother Hall performing arts college somewhere Up North, surrounded by rolling dales, bearded cheesemaking villagers (male and female) and wildlife of the squirrely-type. On the whole, it’s not quite the showbiz experience Tallulah was expecting… but once her mates turn up and they start their ‘FAME! I’m gonna liiiiive foreeeeeever, I’m gonna fill my tiiiiights’ summer course things are bound to perk up. Especially when the boys arrive. (When DO the boys arrive?) Six weeks of parent-free freedom. BOY freedom. Freedom of expression... cos it’s the THEATRE dahling, theatre!!

Talluah Casey is an interesting character to say the least.  I felt this was a book for a younger audience, I could not relate to the characters which made me lack interest in the book. It was a quick read; I read it within a few hours.  I was unable to get a lot out of this book, I would recommend it for someone younger but I will not be reading the sequel. The writing style was quirky and interesting. I enjoyed how all of the characters interacted with each other.  I also enjoyed how Talluah was able to see through Cane and called him out on it.  This book did have some funny parts, such as when she is caught at the window and pretends to be cleaning.
Overall I gave it a 3/5. I enjoyed it enough to finish it but it’s not a series I would continue to read.

Prozac Nation- Elizabeth Wurtzel

Hello!

I just got back from Las Vegas which was amazing of course. I am pretty jet legged though so I am going to do an IMM tomorrow. I got some awesome books while on vacation then hit up the library today. I wish I could have stayed longer but I am now back in Canada where when I landed it was -2 sadly.

Title: Prozac Nation
Author: Elizabeth Wurtzel
Format: Soft cover
Source: Borrowed from the library
Rating: 3/5

Goodread Summary:
Elizabeth Wurtzel writes with her finger in the faint pulse of a generation whose ruling icons are Kurt Cobain, Xanax, and pierced tongues. A memoir of her bouts with depression and skirmishes with drugs, Prozac Nation still manages to be a witty and sharp account of the psychopharmacology of an era.

Elizabeth is an interesting character. She does not understand why she is depressed. She tries to rationalize why she feels this way and tries to convince herself her life is not bad enough to merit being depressed and unhappy constantly. I liked her a lot; she showed her deepest and darkest feeling and showed the side of depression we don’t always see. We hear about depression and how it affects people and the medication that is given to try to fix the imbalance but I feel like we don’t get to see the people who are actually suffering from it and how they feel and how they get through their days feeling like this and having people trying to help them but not fully understanding what they are going through.

Her family was like a roller coaster. Sometimes I liked them then they would plummet and I wanted to jump in the book and defend Elizabeth from them. Her dad was nonexistent and when he was there with Elizabeth he just brushed off her feelings and didn’t listen to what she had to say. He was unwilling to help her; he kept trying to make her mother pay. Elizabeth’s mother was an interesting character. She would be there for Elizabeth then she would start at her making her feel guilty. I felt sympathetic towards her, trying to help Elizabeth while trying to keep her own life a float.

I would recommend this book for anyone who is suffering from depression or know someone who is. It made me feel differently about depression.  Sadly like Elizabeth I have wondered why people cannot just pull themselves out of it.  People close to me have suffered and I feel that I did not sympathize as much as I could have. This book has given be an inside look into what people suffering go through and how the world see’s them. It changed my view of mental illness.

Tiger's Curse- Colleen Houck

Title: Tiger's Curse
Author: Colleen Houck
Format: Hardcover
Source: Borrow from the library

Goodreads Summary:
The last thing Kelsey Hayes thought she’d be doing this summer was trying to break a 300-year-old Indian curse. With a mysterious white tiger named Ren. Halfway around the world.
But that’s exactly what happened.
Face-to-face with dark forces, spell- binding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever.
Tiger’s Curse is the exciting first volume in an epic fantasy-romance that will leave you breathless and yearning for more.
“. . . a sweet romance and heart-pounding adventure. I found myself cheering, squealing, and biting my nails — all within a few pages. In short, Tiger’s Curse is magical." -Becca Fitzpatrick, New York Times bestselling author of Hush, Hush.

****This review contains spoilers****

The idea of this story is unique. I have not read much about India or its culture. I liked the mythology behind it and the explanation for the different beliefs and the statues. The mythology of this book was my favourite part. The curse is complex and the rules of the curse seem to be shifting. It’s not simply doing this and then the curse is lifted and you can start living your life. I enjoyed that part and I can see how Houck could continue the series with this idea in mind. The cover is of course amazing. The beautiful design is also on the pages which I enjoyed. I also like how if you hold it a certain way the design comes out more.

I’m not sure if I like Kelsey. She frustrated me a lot and I wanted to yell at her to stop acting like a child. I did enjoy that Houck choose older characters for her book who are entering college. I think that makes it easier for me personally to relate to and it made me want to read further. Kelsey still acts like a teenage girl through. I thought her pushing Ren away constantly was a little frustrating. The whole I love you but I can’t be with you because you’ll break my heart got annoying. I understood where she was coming from with not wanting to be left behind by Ren while he adjusted but I didn’t like how she treated him. She allowed herself to fall for him and wanted to be with him until the ending then she seems to suddenly change her mind, although she took the things he offered her just fine. When she thought it was Mr. Kadam she wanted to give it back but once she found out it was Ren she sort just said oh well okay I will keep his stuff.

Oh Ren you were one of my favourite characters. I truly felt bad for him. First being cursed for hundreds of years then once you find someone you can trust and love after being hurt by you fiancée and your brother have her turn you away and leave you. In a way I feel he was taken advantage of, first by his brother, Kishan before the curse then by Kelsey after he returns to his home in India. He saved her life numerous times and she seemed to disregard this and just left him in India. I usually side with the girl but I am on Ren’s side completely. In a way I hope he finds someone else.

Mr. Kadam was my second favourite. He devoted his life to Ren and Kishan and seems content to do it. He was selfless and brave. I loved how he spoke of his family. He plays a major part in the story as a background character. He’s not always there but his influence is clear.

I would read the sequel but I am not in a rush to read it.  I love the back story but I was really disappointed the in the main heroine in the story. I felt she was a weak character. I hope that she improves in the next book.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, that spotlights upcoming releases that I am eagerly anticipating.
 This week's can't-wait-to-read is:
Title: Explosive Eighteen: A Stephanie Plum Novel
Author: Janet Evanovich
Format: Hardcover
Release date: November 22 2011
Series: Yes, book 18

Goodreads Summary:
Can't wait to find out what happens next? Luckily, you won't have to wait very long!  The next Stephanie Plum adventure arrives later this year: on November 22, 2011! So sit tight and before you know it, Explosive Eighteen will be here.

I am so freaking excited for this book. I love this series. It is one of my favourites. Stephanie Plum is hilarious plus Ranger in my head is soooooooo sexy. Ughh. This book comes out this month. My best friend told me not to buy it so I am thinking it is going to be a birthday present. When number Seventeen came out, I did wait a few days for and I lucked out and found it used. It took a lot of will power which I am lacking. Smoking Seventeen ended with me begging for the next book to come out.

If you have not read this series, you need to immediately. Stephanie Plum and her misadventures have kept me wanting more for seventeen books. Clearly it is amazing. One for the Money is the first book in the series. It is addicting. It might seem intimidating to start a series with so many in it but it is worth it.

If anyone else is a huge fan, leave a comment below so we can discuss the sexy men in this book and of course Stephanie’s grandmother. She is awesome.

Top Ten tuesdays

Top Ten Tuesday
Ten Books I want to read in November. I am sorry this is a little late but I got inspiration from Katie at Katie’s book blog. She had sixteen books (I believe) that she wanted to read in November which inspired me to do a TTT post.  I am going to try to do a TTT for the ten books I would like to read in a month. I probably will not get through all of them but I think it will be a good goal to set for myself.

1) Perfect Chemistry
I’ve read some awesome reviews on this book and it is one I have been waiting awhile to read. I also love that the other books series are out so that I don’t have to wait.  Sad, I know.

2) Withering Tights (Misadventures of Tallulah Casey, #1)- Louise Rennison.
This is another book I picked up on a whim at the library. I have seen a few reviews for this book and it looks like it could be interesting. I think it would make a good weekend read.

3) The Lifeguard- Deborah Blumenthal
Again thank you NetGalley for giving me this book to review. It does not come out until March of 2012 but I want to read it early. I’m thinking I will save this one for my trip to Vegas and read it on the plane. It will force me to concentrate and make notes.

4) Socrates Weeps as Plato Laughs- Leslie Bruce Irwin
Does a manuscript count as a book? I think it should so it’s getting added to my list. It is a little under 300 pages.  The catch line for it is A Social Political Fiction novel that’s fun to read. It sounds good. It is from a local author who approached the book club I am a member of and asked us to read it and let him know what he thought.

5) The Everafter- Amy Huntley
Another book I am so excited to read. Bargain find + awesome reviews.  I have read a few reviews raving about how amazing this book is plus finding it majorly discounted is not too bad either. This one is pretty short so I think I could probably read it pretty fast.

6) Firelight – Sophie Jordan
This one I bought awhile ago. I found it for my e-reader at a rock bottom price. After reading the reviews for it I still cannot understand why it was so cheap but that’s okay. It worked to my advantage. I still have not read this yet which is why I have added it to be TBR for November.  I think I will also save this one for Vegas. I’m hoping to read two books on my vacation.

7) Fragile Eternity- Melissa Marr
I’m going to be honest here. I did not enjoy Wickedly Lovely as much as I thought I would but this was on the bargain book self at Chapter’s so I bought the second one and decided to give the series another change.  I liked Ink Exchange a lot better than Wickedly Lovely.  It was more dark and twisty. I’m hoping the third one is more like the 2nd book.

8) 13 Little Blue Envelopes- Maureen Johnson
Good weekend read. Plus I also got the sequel for $3 so I figure I should get a move on and read this series.  It looks like a quick light read; I need one of those once in awhile.

9) Eragon- Christopher Paolini
There seems to be a lot of hype about the newest book so I thought why not to this one.  I don’t think I have ever read a book involving Dragons, besides Harry Potter so I think it will be different and something new to read about.

10) The Zahir- Paulo Coelho
My goal is to eventually read all his books. I own this one and have not read it yet. I want to because I love all of his books but this book seems to be always pushed to the side so I am going to try to read it this month.

What books are you reading in November? Do you have any suggestions for this month or next month?

13 To Life- Shannon Delany

Title: 13 To Life
Author: Shannon Delany
Format: Soft Cover
Source: Borrowed from the library
Rating: 4/5

GoodReads Summary:
Everything about Jessie Gillmansen’s life changed when her mother died. Now even her hometown of Junction is changing.  Mysterious dark things are happening. All Jessie wants is to avoid more change. But showing a hot new guy around Junction High, she’s about to discover a whole new type of change. Pietr Rusakova is more than good looks and a fascinating accent—he’s a guy with a dangerous secret. And his very existence is sure to bring big trouble to Jessie’s small town.  It seems change is the one thing Jessie can’t avoid…

I picked this up on a whim. I had heard about it but never read any reviews or contemplated buying it.  I stumbled across it at the library. I was going to pick up another book and for some reason this one caught my eye so I decided to read it and see what it was all about. Some of the Goodread reviews were a little discouraging, but I already had it at home with me so I decided to give it a chance.  I am glad I did. It is a quick read and a little fluffy but it passed the time and I was able to finish it in one day.
There are werewolves as main characters.  This never seems to happen so kudos to Delany for that. They are becoming more popular as the main characters or species in a book but I still don’t think they are getting as much time in the spot light as vampires do which is unfortunate since werewolves are an untapped market and so much can be done with the mythology.
Jessie is a character in some ways I can relate to and other I just want to smack her. She tries to be selfless but it comes off as irritating and really not true.
********SPOILER***************
When she tells Pietr to date Sarah because Sarah likes him I though well that’s a little strange but if she is willing to sacrifice what she feels for Pietr then that’s all right, but this does not happen. Jessie and Pietr are constantly sneaking off to make out and she spends the night at his house?!?!  How is this being “selfless” and putting Sarah’s feelings first.  Plus if Pietr did not like her why did he take her to the dance and why does he continue to date her?!? Why not tell Jessie he likes her and wants to be with only her and he will tell Sarah that he does not feel this way about her instead of dragging her through all this.  Jessie is going to come off worse off now because she hid her feelings which will hurt her best friend more than if she would have been honest.
********SPOILER***************
The ending made me want to read the second book.  I hope it is better than the first. I enjoyed it but in a way made me feel like when I read Twilight. I enjoyed it while I was reading it and would read it again, but after reading it I notice all the little things that annoyed me in the book adding up. I want to continue to read the series and I hope Jessie can work things out with Sarah and come up with a better solution for the situation she has put herself into.

In My Mailbox (2)

In My Mailbox (2)
IMM is hosted by Kristi from The Story Siren.

This week was a slow week for me but I think that is a good thing. I have a lot of books.   The first one is from NetGalley (Thank you!) and the other book I received is a manuscript from a local author.
For Review:
The Lifeguard- Deborah Blumenthal

Socrates Weeps as Plato Grins- Leslie Bruce Irwin
(Sorry it is a word document so I declided to include a picture of the icon. No cover avaliable yet).

I am going to try to read the manuscript this weekend...hopefully.  I also have two library books to finish.

What books did you get this week? Was your list long or short?

Anna and the French Kiss- Stephanie Perkins

Title: Anna and the French Kiss
Author: Stephanie Perkins
Format: E-Book
Source: Borrowed from the library
Rating: 4/5

Goodreads Summary:
Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris - until she meets Etienne St. Clair: perfect, Parisian (and English and American, which makes for a swoon-worthy accent), and utterly irresistible. The only problem is that he's taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of her almost-relationship back home.

As winter melts into spring, will a year of romantic near - misses end with the French kiss Anna - and readers - have long awaited?
Do not judge this book by its cover.  It Is fabulous.  I did judge it by its cover and the cover. I had a lot of judgement towards it but I kept reading on book blogs how amazing it was so I read it and it was soo good. I cheated a little and read it on my e-reader so I wouldn’t have to look at the cover but none the less I suggest reading it if you have not already.
Anna is upset when she is shipped off to a boarding school in Paris. She likes her life in Atlanta and is in no rush to leave.  Then she meets Etienne St. Clair who makes boarding school so much better, minus the fact that he has a girlfriend.  Anna makes her feelings know but she acknowledges he has a girlfriend which I find rare in novels these days. Anna is a character you can relate to. She swoons but not in a bad way, she is realistic and funny. She makes new friends and starts over in France.
Etienne makes me want to jump on a plane and go to France.  He makes it known he has a girlfriend even though he finds he is attracted to Anna. I did get a little mad at him but he made up for it.
Read this book.  I cannot wait to read her next book.
